Who We Are

Singing For Wellbeing, founded by Orgena Rose, is an organization dedicated to improving wellbeing through the power of singing.

Our grassroots movement is comprised of individuals with a passion for singing and wellbeing, including healthcare professionals, musicians, teachers, and community workers. We are united in our commitment to enhancing mental and emotional health through song.

We were established because mental health challenges are a significant concern, and singing is clinically proven to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety more effectively and quickly than traditional treatments.

Our Values

Connected When Singing

We empower individuals to grow together, inspire and support one another with deep care, and practive from a foundation of self-love.

Couragous

We lead from the heart, push the boundaries of our creativity, and embrace discomfort willingly.

Inclusive

We recognize inequality and work alongside diverse communities to foster change.

Our Story

Singing For Wellbeing was founded by Orgena Rose, a passionate advocate for the transformative power of music. As a professional musician, Orgena found solace and joy in singing with others. She realized the profound impact this had on her own wellbeing and wanted to share this gift with others facing various life challenges.

The idea took root when Orgena couldn’t find a singing group that welcomed everyone. Encouraged by friends, she started her own group where people could come together and experience the joy of communal singing. The movement grew organically through word of mouth, as more individuals sought out these nurturing and supportive singing communities.

Over the past two decades, Orgena has trained over 100 people to lead Singing For Wellbeing groups, creating song-sharing communities that promote health and happiness.

Our Impact

Our leader training programs significantly impact the health and wellbeing of participants, enhance employability, and build financial resilience.

– **100%** of leadership trainees showed an immediate improvement in their wellbeing.

– **87%** of trainees pursued self-employment within three months of training.

– **100%** felt better equipped to earn a living post-training.

– **100%** reported increased confidence in entering or re-entering the labor market.

– **100%** gained skills to undertake more flexible working arrangements.

Our Plans

We aim to make the Singing For Wellbeing approach accessible to everyone across the UK, integrating it into various community services.

To achieve this ethically and sustainably, we have committed to an Equality, Inclusion, Diversity, and Anti-Racism (EIDAR) policy. Our key initiatives include:

– Actively representing and serving diverse communities.

– Monitoring the diversity of our leaders and group members to identify and address gaps.

– Co-producing our EIDAR strategy with individuals who have lived experiences of inequality and exclusion.

– Requiring all leaders to engage in ongoing EIDAR training and self-evaluation.

– Cultivating a nuanced understanding of the cultural origins of the songs we sing and addressing difficult legacies as they arise.

Join us in our mission to spread the joy and healing power of singing to everyone.

Singing For Wellbeing – The Evidence

What’s the evidence for Singing For Wellbeing?

Evidence for Singing: “Studies have reported increases of oxytocin, a social bonding hormone, which helps to explain why singing in a group is such a good ice-breaker. The natural high it gives you also helps with pain relief. Many people living with chronic pain report that regular singing means they need fewer painkillers to control their pain.

*Singing and your immune system*

One of the most surprising findings of recent research is that singing in a group, for as little as one hour, could boost your immune system. One 2004 study which compared the impact of singing with the effects of listening to music, found that those who sang produced higher levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody which acts as an important first line of defence for the immune system.

Dr Fancourt, who has led several studies looking at singing and the effects on our immune system, has found that just single sessions of singing in a choir can lead to reductions in chronic inflammation. Lower levels of inflammation improve our immune system’s capacity to respond to infections. It allows our immune system to dedicate greater resources to efficiently fighting off invaders. But that’s not the only thing. “This is really important,” Dr Fancourt explains, “because we know that inflammation is linked in with our mental health, for example, our depressive symptoms.”
